Amazon.com Sprouts Ears, Becomes Elf

By Jason Lee Miller

The thing about Santa's helpers is that North Pole legislation disallows Papa Noel from outsourcing. That means you're on your own with a mile-long list. That could be the reasoning behind Amazon.com's "virtual gift assistant" offered through a new site it calls Gift Central.

The website is designed to help visitors organize Amazon customers' gift-giving this holiday season while avoiding the pain of Jingle Bell muzack blaring from above the escalators as soon as the Halloween decorations are taken down.

The main feature of Gift Central is the Gift Organizer that allows visitors to build their own Gift Recipient List by selecting relevant occasions and holidays. Based on each recipient, the Gift Organizer links directly to Wish Lists, offers gift recommendations, saves gift ideas, and tracks gifts already purchased.

"Amazon understands that our customers appreciate low prices, great selection and convenience--especially during the holiday season," said Kathy Savitt, vice president, Amazon.com. "This year, we set out to create a set of gift-giving tools to help customers discover and buy the perfect gift for everyone on their list, for all occasions."

As part of the launch, Amazon also announced a partnership with DailyCandy.com to feature "Today's Gift," daily shopping-themed articles with accompanying gift ideas written by the editors of DailyCandy exclusively for Amazon.

I was just thinking we need more articles on shopping.

"DailyCandy knows what's great about shopping, and Amazon knows how to make shopping great. We're hoping to provide Amazon's holiday customers with the same fun and inspired ideas we give DailyCandy readers every day," said Peter Sheinbaum, CEO, DailyCandy, Inc.

Bill Gates Lunchbox Design On EBay

By David Utter
A benefit for the Food Bank of New York and the Lunchbox Fund includes lunchboxes with designs by a number of celebrities, one of which just happens to be the world's richest man.

The Register described it as 'Bill Gates' lunchbox on eBay', which makes the reader wonder what kind of lunchbox he had back in the day. Probably something sci-fi oriented with rockets on it.

However, the lunchbox on eBay was designed by Gates, though the writers at the Register speculate he passed the task off to a software designer. The design includes Microsoft's 'Start Something' slogan, with artwork on both sides of the lunchbox showing culinary and curiosity themes, sprialing out of a, get this, a Window.

The Microsoft Windows XP logo appears on both sides of the lunchbox, so when Vista finally arrives next year it will be a valuable collectible item.

At press time, the Gates lunchbox was up to $610 in bidding. All proceeds go to the two charities holding the auctions.
