AOL are to launch a Beta travel site powered by Kayak, the recently launched travel comparison engine.
The site, that well be at PinpointTravel.com is among a spate of Travel launches and according to Jeffrey DeKorte at Time Warner Travel capitalizes on the belief that consumers would rather cut the middle man out:
Some shoppers are loyal to an agency brand, but we believe the vast majority would rather book through a supplier and miss the middle-man fees,"
AOL's new service is likely to shake up the online travel market, said Diane Clarkson, an analyst with Jupiter Research. "Travel is an extremely competitive environment. It's extremely price-sensitive, and there's not a lot of loyalty," Clarkson said. "Given that marketplace, another player coming in is really going to be increasing the competition." Jupiter Research estimates that online travel was a $54 billion industry in 2004, and will grow to 91 billion in 2009.
Certainly it'll be one to watch for those involved with Travel sites...
